Nice up the Dance! - A Mixed Tape of House Music

Not so long ago in my late-night-after-hours-deep-house-dancing days, a few dj friends of mine namely Dirty Dale and Jermaine Brown, suggested I put some of my energy of dance into playing music. I took their advice and shortly after I found myself living in Paris. In Paris I started buying records at the well renowned Betino Record shop close to Republic. Sure, I did a few parties but it wasn't until I returned to Toronto that I went a bit deeper into buying records. Here is one of my promo mixes from 2006. 

I went under the dj. name Cliché. An old photographic term that I adopted as I also photographed during my time abroad and developed my own film. It might be 'typical' or a cliché to live this bohemian life in Paris and return and do the same, but I think I did it in a different way and here I am 10years later making my living as a Sommelier at one of the countries top restaurants, Alo, shortly after building and creating Midfield Wine Bar with a few other endeavours in between. it's interesting how the hip-hop/grime experience and sound in the UK has that much more of an Island 'ting' connection. I grew up visiting my grandmother in Brooklyn, NYC and was very much exposed to the early hip hop music of the day. I was tuned into the radio any time that I could, and often very late into the night making cassette tapes for my walkman. Today I listen to streaming sites and BBC podcasts and I am witnessing the explosion of UK Grime Artists in North America. I will confess that there is such a comfort in identifying with a raw and 'proppa' island slang that is not just reggae or calypso. It's life in the city, it's life in the ghetto, it's life in the subway, it's life in a cubicle expressed in these rough beats. Don't get me wrong, I make no claim to be a 'ghetto youth'. Though we all have our own struggles and perceptions on life in the city and one struggle is no different than the other, though context and consequence may be very different. It's music that brings us together

Trus me daddy! Grime Time

The last 12months of my musical meanderings have been knee deep in the UK Grime sound. Call it UK's hip hop or rap, but expressed over electronic made beats versus old jazz samples of NYC and rhymes that spit at lighting fast speed with an Island twang versus the sharp heavy hitting word smiths of inner city America.

Osunlade is arguably a living legend in the world of House Music. At the same time a Dj and a composer of authentic and original beats as the head of Yoruba records, I find this podcast to be spiritually upbeat and always inspiring. There are no use of effects or enhancers in his mix. Simply a lesson in programming and generation of energies. If you ever get a chance to see him play, bring an extra t-shirt, lots of water and check your attitude at the door, cause you will dance, dance, dance.
